Several topics discussed at three negotiation sessions during week of July 13

The Faculty and Administration bargaining teams met three times during the past week, on July 14, 16, and 17, for a total of about 6 1/2 hours. Outside of the formal bargaining sessions, the Faculty team members spent more than 8 hours planning and preparing for negotiations.

Discussions at the table continued to cover a range of topics, including compensation, workload, shared governance, disciplinary processes, and other contract provisions.

The teams reached tentative agreements on changes to several articles, including clarifying some language about selection and hiring processes, and additional agreements about contract language affected by Senate Bill 1 requirements.

Faculty team members said the tone of most of the discussion this week has been collegial, but some topics have resulted in more frustrating conversations.

“It’s disappointing when it feels like we have to keep repeating the same points about the value and importance of the work our faculty members are doing,” Scott Horn said.

“We were hoping to make more progress this week in our discussions about compensation and workload, but there’s still a lot left to do on those topics,” Mark Tiemeier added.

The teams agreed to reserve time for bargaining on four days next week. The next session is scheduled for Monday, July 20.

“We have lots of time set aside for bargaining next week, so we’re hoping for significant progress on the unresolved issues,” Julie McLaughlin said.
