Bargaining sessions continue to emphasize collaborative discussions of issues
The Faculty and Administration bargaining teams had a 30-minute meeting on June 22 and a 90-minute session on June 24.
Faculty team members said this week’s negotiation sessions continued the collaborative approach of last week’s sessions, with a lot of time spent in open conversations about issues raised by each team.
Topics of discussion included clarifying some of the disciplinary process steps described in contract Article 13, continuing to examine where contract provisions might be affected by Senate Bill 1 requirements, and continuing to discuss possible opportunities for “streamlining” some of the processes covered in the contract.
“The discussions have been very productive,” Mark Tiemeier said. “Both teams are working hard to make sure we understand each other’s concerns and goals.”
Julie McLaughlin added, “We all wish we didn’t have to spend so much time talking about Senate Bill 1. However, the new law does have an impact on some provisions in our contract, so it’s in the best interests of faculty and administration to make sure we are incorporating changes where they are needed.”
The next bargaining session is scheduled for Monday, June 29. Sessions are scheduled for July 6 and 7 also, and other dates for bargaining sessions later in July have been identified as well.
In addition to 2 hours at the bargaining table this week, the Faculty team spent nearly 6 hours in planning meetings on June 22, 23, and 24. The food and drinks provided by faculty colleagues are much appreciated “fuel” for these long hours of meetings.
